Miriam Hartung

Germany

"During the residency, I want to explore the political and feminist dimensions of textile art. Inspired by the "Le Costantine" weaving cooperative in Italy, I am particularly interested in how traditional craft can foster empowerment and community. I plan to integrate embroidery next to weaving into my practice —to explore themes of protection and restriction. This residency will help me develop narrative objects that connect historical and contemporary women’s stories.."

Artist´s Statement

A textile can never be thought of independently from its material. The material determines its texture and invites touch. Feeling the fabric enables a precise experience of its structure and content. Thus, I consider textiles as objects that not only invite touch but also interact with the observing person.

In my artistic practice, I explore the peculiarities of textile production techniques and interpret them individually. On one hand, I contextualize contemporary techniques such as tufting in a poetic manner, while on the other hand, I experimentally interpret traditional techniques like weaving. In this context, both the manipulation of the two-dimensional surface of the fabric and the shaping of the textile body take center stage, with the texture always carrying an emotional character. The production process, in particular, serves as a source of inspiration for me. In continuous dialogue with the material, I create objects that emerge within the material itself.
